Echoes From the Hollow is a fictional coming-of-age story set in western Pennsylvania during the 1950s. The tale is anchored in the village of Whistler and its nearby hollow. The first-person story is told through the eyes and voice of Harry Morgan, a young kid who has to make choices and deals with the consequences of bad decisions. Unanticipated danger, sudden death and the threat of eternal damnation are all lurking beneath the veneer of bucolic innocence. Judgmental but often clueless, Harry resolutely makes decisions and reluctantly learns to live with the consequences.
Author Don Roberts is a long-time resident of Monroeville. His formal education began in a one-room country school in Mercer County, PA and ended with a Ph.D. in History from the University of Pittsburgh. He graduated from Slippery Rock State College and taught in Beaver Falls, Penn Hills, Maracaibo, Venezuela, and more than thirty years in Pittsburgh’s inner-city schools. Echoes From the Hollow is his first novel, but two more are in progress.
A portion of all proceeds from sales of the book will go to the Piarist School of eastern Kentucky. The Piarist Brothers provide an outstanding education to impoerished rural children of the area, fifteen miles from Butcher Hollow where Loretta Lynn was born and raised.
